The energy practice of TSMG addresses power generation, transmission and distribution as well as fuels including oil, gas and coal.

The power sector in India has so far been dominated by the government in the form of State Electricity Boards (SEBs). These SEBs have been financially and operationally inefficient. The introduction of the Electricity Act, 2003 is set to change this and bring about unbundling of generation, transmission, distribution and trading, leading to higher activity in captive power generation and greater competition at the retail level. Most large players in the sector have acquired or are in the process of acquiring power trading licences.

In the power sector, TSMG has accumulated a wealth of experience in strategy formulation, and strategic planning and implementation. It has also assisted clients with business process improvements (BPI). In oil and gas, we have helped clients identify the right product mix, change their marketing approach and recommended investments and technologies needed for optimal production. We have also helped clients design appropriate organisational structures that have enabled them to achieve their strategic and business objectives.

TSMG has been working in this sector since the early 1990s and has been able to get a deeper insight into it thanks to our work with Tata Power, one of our major clients. The experience in the domestic power sector is relevant for emerging countries that are going through deregulation. In the light of deregulation, autonomy to public sector undertakings, globalisation and tariff reforms, we have helped some leading integrated petrochemical players with their strategic planning exercise.

Tata Power, Indian Petrochemicals Limited, and Haldia Petrochemicals Limited are some our clients in this space.
